Statewide YEP | Local YEP

The Youth Empowerment Program operates many local and statewide programming events. Each local community operates their own local youth council. These local council’s can decide and work on local issues, community service projects, awareness campaigns and plan and organize fun trips.

At least twice a year these local council’s will send representatives to our statewide meetings. These meetings will involve training, planning and setting the statewide advocacy agenda. All of our programming is determined by YEP youth members.

Our four objectives are:

1.

Housing

The YEP seeks to increase safe and affordable housing options for children, youth and young adults.
2. Education
The YEP programs works to guarantee the right to an education for all youth regardless of residency. We also seek to increase the resources to help individuals succeed once they are enrolled and attending a school.
3. Leadership Development
Through training and practice a youth can become a leader among their peers. Through training, practice and evaluations, youth will be able to take control of their own lives.
4. Civic Engagement
We encourage our youth to actively participate in the society that we all live in. We offer three avenues for civic engagement:
  • Community Service - By actively participating in service projects that give back to the community helps to create pride among youth, a connection to the community, and a feeling of self worth among individuals.

  • Community Awareness - We seek to educate schools, universities, churches and local organizations about the issues of homeless youth. Only through understanding will others begin to be able to help.

  • Advocacy - Advocacy is the active involvement in the political process by contacting legislatures and government officials about issues and problems that homeless youth deal with everyday. Through our efforts of advocacy, long term solutions of justice become possible.

FACT: More than 60,000 children and youth will experience homelessness in Ohio this year.

FACT: 40% of persons living in poverty are children. (U.S. Bureau of Census)
